Submitting Guidelines

The current submission period is open until August 26th. 3 pieces in each category will be accepted.


Short Stories

Short stories are how we refer to submissions under 4000 words. They are currently the only kind of writing submissions we accept (although we plan on changing this in the future). The short stories should follow the following guidelines



Along with these guidelines, please keep the following things in mind.

We only consider previously unpublished works. So please do not submit anything that has previously been published. Simultaneously submitting to our magazine and other magazines is allowed, however we do appreciate if you email us if you are accepted elsewhere (This isn't required, however it is appreciated).

Please only submit one story per submission form. You can submit up to two pieces per submission round.


Art

We publish art focusing on the science fiction and fantasy genres. The art can be abstract but it should have some elements that reference science fiction or fantasy. The art should follow the following guidelines


Along with these guidelines, please keep the following things in mind.

We only consider previously unpublished works. So please do not submit anything that has previously been published. We don't count personal social media in this, so if you have work you've posted to your socials, it's completely okay to submit! Simultaneously submitting to our magazine and other magazines is allowed, however we do appreciate if you email us if you are accepted elsewhere (This isn't required, however it is appreciated).

You can submit up to five pieces per submission round.


AI Usage Policy

We DO NOT accept the use of generative AI in the submissions to our magazine. What counts as AI can get a little blurry but the main point is to not use LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude, etc. Writing and art is a deeply emotional and creative process, and as LLMs do not have the ability to be creative as humans are, we do not accept work written or created by them, either completely, or in part.

Payment

We believe that the work that authors do deserve to get paid. Since we are just starting out, we do not have the funds to give large prizes. With that being said, the prize for being accepted to the first issue of The Fanatic is $25.

Rights

It's important to us that your work remains your work. For the first two months following publication, The Fanatic Literary Magazine will retain First Serial Rights to the work you submitted. After the two months you are free to publish the work elsewhere.

Privacy Policy

In the process of submitting, you will give some information. During the review process this will only be seen by people who are responsible for organizing and judging the submissions. Once the submissions are judged we will confirm with you to determine if you still want your work to be published by us. Only if you do, will information like your name/pen name, author bio, social links, and pronouns be put in public. However, please only include information that you are okay with being seen by others.
